Favorable Tips to Prepare Your Child For Elementary School

Whether you are moving to a new town, or prepping your child for their first year of elementary school, this can be both an exciting and frightening time for your little one. Clearly explaining to your child what is expected of them in their first year of elementary school may make the introduction a little less frightening on their part. Make sure you and your child are both knowledgeable about the new school. Here are a few tips to prepare you and your child for their new elementary school.

  • Make sure you elaborate on expectations of school. The elementary school your child will be attending will be expecting a certain level of achievement from its young students. Talking to your child and expanding on what these expectations may be and encouraging confidence will make a world of difference upon their first day of school. Avoid making these expectations sound hard and unrealistic; let your child know that he or she is going to do a great job in school.
  • Preparation of academics beforehand will arouse interest in school work before their first day. Introduce fun educational software and games that touch on mathematics, reading, and general elementary school education prior to their first day. The earlier you introduce them to their expectations, the easier they will tackle them. Try getting your kids involved in fun educational activities in the summer prior to school starting.
  • Reinforce “school-friendly” bedtimes and meals. Setting a firm sleeping schedule and meal time will get your child in the habit of waking up early and going to bed, which will be required when school starts. Introducing them to this new schedule a few weeks before school starts will ease them into a new bedtime schedule.
  • Build your child’s confidence by frequently talking about school. Inquire what they are most looking forward to about school and if they are excited about their first day. Even question them about their fears about their new school and build encouragement in the time leading up to school starting.
  • Get involved with PTA and open house meetings to know what is going on at your child’s elementary school. This is also a great way to connect with other parents who have children who attend the same school.
  • Introduce your child to “school etiquette,” although it is fun to yell out answers at home, this is a mannerism that may not be acceptable in the classroom. Suggest to your child that they raise there hand and use all of the same manners that they have been taught to use in the household.

Very basic attention and encouragement can go a long way when it comes to the attitude of your child on their first day of school, or first day of school in a new town that your family has recently relocated to.
